History of Roseberry House
Viola May Lowry, one of eight children born to Permelia (Smith) Lowry and Joseph Flemming Lowry, was born May 16, 1860 near Etna, Scott's Valley in Siskiyou County, California.
In 1871, at the age of eleven years, Viola moved with her family to Adin, Big Valley in Modoc County which is about 40 miles from the site of the Modoc Indian War. In her late adult years she wrote an account telling of her fright when, at 13 years old, there was an unexpected attack on the settlers in Big Valley by the Modoc Indians. (The original manuscript is in the files of the Modoc County Museum in Alturas, California.
Her advantages for education were limited but her ambition and determination kept her reading and studying until she acquired a wide general knowledge. Being naturally artistic she started painting at an early age. Over the years she produced many fine landscape paintings, 2 of which still hang in the stairwell of Roseberry House.
On May 22, 1877 she married Thomas Alexander Roseberry of Adin, California, a partner in the General Merchandise Store of Roseberry and Knight. From 1885 to 1887 Thomas Roseberry served in the California Legislature as Assemblyman from Modoc and Lassen Counties. He later engaged in Real Estate, Insurance and the Livestock business in Big Valley. They raised a family of 2 boys, George K. and Thomas A. Jr., and 2 girls, Daisy T. and Mary Aileen.
In 1892 Thomas A. Roseberry was appointed Registrar of the United States Land Office and the family moved to Susanville where she continued to paint as a hobby, giving many fine landscapes to friends and acquaintances. Many of these still adorn their homes and are highly prized as works of one of Northern California's pioneering early women artists.
In 1902 the Roseberrys built and occupied their Susanville home, Roseberry House, which at the time was considered one of the community's finest. It still stands at the original location on North Street at the end of North Lassen Street.
Viola May (Lowry) Roseberry passed away in her home on March 24, 1936 and was buried beside her husband in the old Susanville cemetery.
Biography provided by her grandson, George McDow, Jr. 1984
COTTAGE
The cottage was built/renovated in 2007. There was an original cottage of about 650 sq. ft. built in the early 1950’s. About 1/3 of the original cottage was removed, and the structure totally rehabilitated and about an additional 700 sq. ft. was added on. The cottage is now approx. 1150 sq. ft. The cottage consists of:
1. LIVING ROOM with three large windows looking out on the back of the property and out over the front deck and the garden area. All new wainscoting, paint and wallpaper and new wall-to-wall carpeting. Room has a ceiling fan with light fixture built in. There is a front door off of the living room that leads out onto the front porch and the large deck.
2. DINING ROOM has laminate cherry wood flooring with new wainscoting, trim, baseboards, etc. The light fixture is an old ships glass handing bell shape. Two large and two smaller windows that look out on the front deck and the garden provide plenty of light.
3. KITCHEN has laminate flooring and all counters and wall areas below the cabinets are tiled. All cabinets were custom made of hickory with a champagne finish. All appliances are brushed stainless steel. The dishwasher, the refrigerator and the freezer are Frigidare brand top of the line and are cabinet depth. There is a corner double kitchen sink with 1 hp disposal and there is a salad sink across the aisle with a 1 hp disposal. The stove is Jenn Aire with a gas five burner cook top and two ovens that are electric. The stove is also top of the line and above it is a large LG microwave oven. On the counter, across from the stove and next to the salad sink is a built in Jenn Aire electric cook top that has two burners and next to that an indoor grilling station. Just off of the kitchen is a large (approx. 5ft by 6ft) walk in pantry with many many shelves and much floor space. There is recessed lighting and antique hanging lights in the kitchen. There is a door off of the kitchen that leads to the walkway between the cottage and the Roseberry House
4. MASTER BEDROOM, which is two steps down from the rest of the cottage. There is a large walk in closet with built in shelves, storage spaces and hanging clothes bars. Along the entire opposite wall are four sliding closet doors with much additional storage space and hanging clothes bars. There is a skylight in the room, a large oval window and an 6-foot sliding patio door that goes out onto the rear wood deck. The entire room including the stairs going up to the rest of the cottage has new wall-to-wall carpeting.
5. FULL BATH with all new tile throughout. New sink, new cabinets and large storage areas. There is a sky light in the ceiling over the bathtub.
6. ONE HALF BATH off of the dining room has laminate flooring and an antique Singer sewing machine cabinet with sink and faucet added. All ceilings in the dining room, ½ bath and kitchen areas are 10-foot ceilings.
7. FRONT DECK. There is a very large front porch deck that is approx. 15 feet wide and stretches the entire length of the cottage (along the side of the kitchen, the dining room and the living room). The deck has two gates that go to the driveway around the cottage and there are three separate deck areas, each two steps lower than the one above it. The deck looks west toward the garden area. The deck is built around a very very old scarlet Maple tree that shelters the deck and most of the cottage. The front deck is natural cedar and has a railing completely around the deck. The back deck is alternating redwood and cedar planks and again has a railing completely around the deck.
8. The cottage has electricity, natural gas, telephone, kerosene and sewer hooked up. The heating source for the cottage is a monitor type kerosene heater. The exterior of the cottage is shiplap natural cedar siding and matches exactly the Laundry/craft room.
LOT configuration and size. The Roseberry House property is L shaped. The main house, cottage, laundry room and garage sit on a rectangular lot that is 110 feet along North Street and 155 feet along the alley on the west side of the property. Total square footage of that portion is 17, 050 sq. ft. A rectangular lot 75 feet long by 55 feet wide sits at the northwest corner of the main lot. That additional square footage is 4,125 sq. ft. The parcel, although L shaped, is one single lot, and is taxed and assessed as such. The total square footage of the entire parcel is 21, 175 sq. ft., which is slightly smaller than one-half acre in size.
A driveway goes from North Street down the west side of the property to the back property line, and then runs along that line toward the east and ends in the alley that fronts the east side of the property. So there is access to the property from three sides.
The L shaped portion of the lot is currently used as the garden area and has a strawberry patch, 40 feet of raspberry bushes, and apricot, peach, cherry, apple and pear trees within the garden area. There is sufficient space remaining to grow all of the vegetables that could ever be used by the owners and their guests. Located in the garden area is a small shed that houses the chipper/shredder, rototiller, lawn mower, weed whackers, etc. The garden area is completely fenced and is deer proof.
LAUNDRY/CRAFT ROOM – SHOP
The Laundry Room was constructed in 2006 on the alley behind the Roseberry House. The facility has approx. 700 square feet and is divided into two sections.
1. The front section (approx 2/3rds of the building) houses the laundry facilities (2 washers and 2 dryers and the iron rite, ironing board, etc.). It also has a double stainless steel sink within the laundry area and a ½ bath (toilet & sink) in a separate room within the laundry/craft area. There is a large sewing/craft area with built in spaces for sewing machines. Surrounding the sewing/craft center are many many built in cabinets for storage. There are three large windows for light, with three large overhead florescent light fixtures. The entire area is carpeted, except for the laundry and sectioned bath areas that are tiled. There is a drain in the floor in the center of the laundry area in case of accidental spills.
2. The back section (approx. 1/3rd of the building) houses the shop area. Within the shop are three work benches and many many shelves for storage. There is a sink in the shop with hot & cold running water. Also contained in the shop is the demand water heater that services the shop, the laundry/craft room and the cottage. The water heater is a kerosene on-demand water heater. The shop is two steps lower than the laundry/craft room. There is a door from the shop into the laundry/craft room and another door from the shop to the outside. There is also a double door (8 feet wide) leading to the back of the property and the driveway that comes off the alley and goes completely around the shop, cottage and main house to the street.
3. Within the shop is the access to the attic. The attic is completely insulated and floored so there is storage above the entire building. The entire building was insulated at the time of construction and all interior walls are dry walled and finished. The shop area is a cement floor that has a large carpet remnant in the center to keep the dust down.
4. The laundry/craft shop building is sided with shiplap natural cedar siding that matches the siding on the cottage.
5. The laundry/craft shop building has a telephone line, natural gas, water, kerosene and sewer lines.
The garage for the Roseberry House is an extra large two-car freestanding garage. It is 550 sq. ft of space, with two large workbenches and shelves for storage on both sidewalls and the rear wall. There is also ample storage in the rafters of the garage. It has a side door leading to the rear walkway and an 18-foot garage door opening with an automatic garage door and opener. There is sufficient room within the garage to park two full size SUV’s.
The garage is located to the east of the main house and access to the garage is reached off of the alley that runs down the east side of the Roseberry House. To the south of the garage going toward North Street are 6 full size parking spaces. The parking spaces are not paved, however the entire alley and parking spaces have been recently improved by the import and laying of 4 inches of road base over the entire area.
